Olympics
The Olympics are very interesting. Not only, the history of the modern Olympics but also the events that go on during the Olympics. The history of the modern Olympics is fascinating because of the story behind it. Pierre de Coubertin wanted to re-establish the link between art and the Olympics. One of these events, the men’s ice hockey is fascinating because of the intensity of the game.
Originally, the Olympics were banned by a Christian Roman Emperor. Pierre de Coubertin a French man began to bring the games back. Athens was chosen as the location for the first Olympics on April 6, 1896. Some of the events that they had during these Olympics were track and field, swimming, gymnastics, wrestling, weightlifting, cycling, fencing, shooting, and tennis. There were 280 participants from 13 countries, all the competitors were men and a few of the men were tourists who were allowed to sign up. The modern Olympics were started again because the world had been introduced to inventions such as railroads and telegraphs. This meant that people could communicate more easily therefore, could compare who was better in things such as sculptures and art. Pierre de Coubertin thought because the world was all competing in the arts they could also compete in athletics. There was no winter Olympics until 1924. (2)
Next, some people think that the men’s ice hockey is the most appealing sport in the winter Olympics. People may think this because of the intensity and aggression that goes on during these games. Canada currently has the highest record for gold medals in ice hockey. They have won 11 of the 26 gold medals. The U.S.A has won 3 gold medals and ten silver medals. The United States team in the past winter Olympics, have placed in either gold, silver, or bronze they seem to be a strong team. (4)The Soviet Union and Canada are some of the United States strongest competitors. They are the best because of the fact that hockey is a huge part of their culture; therefore they grow up with it.
In conclusion, the modern Olympics are a fascinating part of our society. Some people may enjoy ice hockey and others may not. The modern Olympics are interesting because of their unique history; the men’s ice hockey is fascinating because of the passion and hostility that goes on during the games. The Olympics bring together the world in games which they compete in.

5. Look up 3 athletes who have medaled in your sport in the past. List the medals they won and the years they won them.
From U.S.A in 1992 Jackie Joyner-Kersee won a gold medal. Also in the 1992 olympics Sabine Braun from Germany won a bronze medal. In the 2000 olympics Yelena Prokhorova from Russia won a silver medal.
